The iPhone 5 is an outstanding handset, but it s slightly smaller and a lot more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy S3. It has the finest build quality, the brightest screen, and is a pleasure to use. It also did extremely well in all our performance tests. Recent updates have introduced some niggles, including the change to the phone s connection port, which makes existing accessories obsolete. Despite the high quality, it s hard to justify the cost when comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy S3, which is much cheaper and just as good. £529

The iPhone 5 is the first Apple phone to move away from the 3.5in screen it s had since the launch of the original. Now it has a 4in screen, with a resolution of 1,136 x 640 pixels. It has a maximum brightness of 582cd/m2, making it the brightest screen in this Group Test, and a high pixel density of 326ppi. Despite the screen being so bright and sharp, we found that the colours on the Samsung Galaxy S3 are more vibrant. Its build quality is excellent, with an aluminium rear panel making the device very solid, yet at 112g, it s the lightest of all the phones we tested. The main downside to the new design is that the connection port has changed to the new Lightning connector. It s the same connector you get on the latest iPad and iPad Mini, but anyone with existing accessories and chargers will need a converter

The 8-megapixel camera is great quality, the equal of the Galaxy S3 s, and takes sharp, accurate pictures. It doesn t have a burst mode to take lots of shots at once, but it does have a brilliant panorama mode. The phone s dual-core processor looks inferior on paper, but it blitzed our SunSpider test with a time of 932ms, beaten only by the Nokia Lumia 920. It also did well in the Geekbench test, with a score of 1,674. Only the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 beat it, with scores of 1,782 and 1,956 respectively. In the 3D-heavy GLBenchmark, the iPhone managed 39fps, compared to the Note 2 s next-best 17fps. Operating the iPhone is flawlessly smooth, while the battery offers a similar level of performance to the Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X. The main problem with the phone is its price. Even at 31 Pound per month, you have to pay up front for the handset, and you can get a phone that s just as good for much less money.
