Changing the Icon Image By default, a desktop shortcut uses the icon for the document s application. So if you create an icon for an Excel worksheet, you get the Excel worksheet icon for the shortcut. You don t have to settle for these default icons, however. Windows lets you change the image for any icon, with just a few clicks of the mouse. Here s how to do it.
1. Right-click the shortcut on your desktop.
2. When the pop-up menu appears, select Properties.
3. When the Properties dialog box appears, select the Shortcut tab.
4. Click the Change Icon button.
5. When the Change Icon dialog box appears, select one of the icons displayed, or click the Browse button to browse to a different file and select an icon there.
6. Click OK.
You can find icons in a few different files. I like to browse the included icons in the c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll, c:\windows\system32\ imageres.dll, and c:\windows\system32\moricons.dll files. And here s another place to find icons in application files. That s right, you can navigate to any program file (.exe) and find an icon for that application stored within; you can apply that icon to any shortcut.
